  • Help for Helpers Self-Care Planning Workbook (Digital Download)

Help for Helpers Self-Care Planning Workbook (Digital Download)

“The expectation that we can be immersed in suffering and loss daily and not be touched by it is as unrealistic as expecting to be able to walk through water without getting wet.” Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen

Work-related stress syndromes like burnout, compassion fatigue, and secondary trauma are occupational hazards for those who provide care for others in a professional capacity. Intentional, consistent self-care (while, yes, a gross term) is vital in cultivating our capacity to be present in our work, offer compassionate support, and avoid causing harm to those in our care.

    In this e-workbook, you’ll find:

    • Resources to build self-awareness
    • Information on symptoms of secondary trauma and burnout
    • Practices to utilize in the moment
    • Tools to help you reflect on current self-care practices and identify new ones
    • Habit trackers
    • ‘Brain Dump’ pages
    • Lots and lots of other good stuff

The digital download means you’ll receive the workbook as a PDF in your email. Do with it what you will– print it all out and put it in a cute binder (for my type A friends), fill it in via Adobe, or make copies of the pages that resonate with you. No limit on downloads, printing, or sharing. (I just ask you to keep the attribution at the bottom of the page)

Take A Break Deck (100 Pack)

Stress is running high and taking a toll on each and every one of our minds and bodies. While we know we need to do “self-care” we may not prioritize it, or feel resourced enough to engage in it. One thing we get wrong about “self-care” is that it must take hours. In reality, the therapeutic ‘dose’ of activity needed to soothe the brain-body’s stress response is only minutes long. Building brief Micropractices into your day can build a much more resilient stress response system.

So wtf is a Micropractice? Glad you asked. Micropractices are 1-3 minute exercises that utilize proven approaches for soothing the stress response and regulating the nervous system. Using the power of patterned, repetitive, rhythmic movement, bilateral stimulation, self-massage, and mindfulness, Micropractices tap into the innate wisdom of the body and mind and do not require any additional equipment.

There is no training required to engage in Micropractices. Explore the cards individually, in combination; alone or in community with your people.

You hold the key to your unique nervous system. Consider these practices additional tools to help you unlock your unique path to healing.

Are you stressed the f*** out? I mean, I get it. We are up against so much. Here is a non-exhaustive list of the stuff that can keep you up at night: health, money, work, family, relationships, school, housing, climate change, child/elder care, social and political climate, rights being stripped away, etc. etc. etc. And, while there seems to be a ton of time to stress, there doesn’t seem to be nearly as much time available for managing it. The good news is it doesn’t have to take forever. You already have everything you need to create a more adaptive stress response system. The resources lie in your body– specifically, in your nervous system. But how on earth to tap them? It all begins with figuring out how to tune into the unique language of your brain and body. Consider this your trusty guide.

Is this a workbook? Sort of. Here’s some of what you’ll find inside.

Self-Regulation 101: an overview of the nervous system, brain, and stress response system.

Sensations: support recognizing the nervous system’s language and understanding what regulating it might feel like.

Thoughts & Feelings: resources distinguishing thoughts from feelings and why they both matter.

The Micropractices: 28 mind-body practices, 1-3 minutes long and rooted in neurobiology, to soothe the stress response. Each micropractice includes a body map (to record body sensations experienced during the practice) plus prompts to reflect on how the practice impacted you.

Make a Plan: worksheets to help you think about integrating the micropractices into your daily life.

Other stuff too! I truly packed in as much as I could. That’s how strongly I want you to feel better.
